The scope of this study is to determine and identify current gaps and technical solution to enable national Ground Based Air Defence (GBAD) System to be integrated into an operational NATO air defence system in support of NATO operations. The achievement of a mobile NATO medium and higher level air defence capability to counter current and new threats, including rockets, UAV launched weapons and cruise missiles, requires the integration of deployable NATO air defence systems, up to and including MEADS, into common system. The aim is “plug and fight” interoperability of the deployable NATO air defence forces. A NATO GBAD capability included the Single Integrated Air Picture (SIAP) with the ability to transmit the air picture information in near real time to all air defence units. This requires harmonized operational and system requirements as well as defined Interface Control Documents (ICDs). The objectives of the study is to integration and interoperability gaps to be addressed when bringing together current NATO deployable medium and high altitude air defence system systems and propose technical options for resolving these gaps. The study gives particular attention to the air defence capabilities of the new NATO member nations, in particular communication systems and the issues associated with their integration in the legacy NATO air defence structure. In addition the requirements and interfaces necessary to be fully integrated with the evolving BMD command and control architecture is addressed. |
